What Is Image Cropping?
Cropping removes the outer parts of an image to focus on a specific subject or to change its aspect ratio. Unlike resizing (which scales the whole image), cropping discards the edges. It is one of the most fundamental image editing operations — used to improve composition, remove distracting backgrounds, standardize proportions, or prepare images for platforms with specific aspect ratio requirements.
Common Cropping Use Cases
Removing unwanted background from product photos
Cropping a portrait photo to a square for social media profile pictures
Focusing on the subject of a photo by removing distracting edges
Extracting a specific portion of a screenshot or diagram
Preparing banner images with exact aspect ratios (16:9, 4:3, 1:1)
Crop vs Resize: What's the Difference?
Resizing changes the dimensions of the entire image — scaling all content up or down. Cropping removes parts of the image without scaling. Use resize when you need a smaller or larger image with the same content. Use crop when you want to select just part of the image. Often you use both: crop first to select the region, then resize to the final target dimensions.
