Lorem Ipsum is dummy placeholder text used by designers and typographers to fill space in layouts when the actual content is not yet available. It has been the industry standard placeholder since the 1500s, when an unknown printer scrambled a passage of Cicero's "de Finibus Bonorum et Malorum" to make a type specimen book.
The most famous Lorem Ipsum passage begins with "Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit..." — these are meaningless Latin words that approximate the rhythm and word length distribution of real English text, making them ideal for layout testing without distracting readers with real content.
Some designers prefer to use real (but placeholder) content rather than Lorem Ipsum, arguing that real words better simulate how the actual product will look. Lorem Ipsum has the advantage of being clearly "not real" — stakeholders won't misread it as final copy. For formal client presentations, consider using industry-specific sample content instead of generic Lorem Ipsum.
